THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG SHORTLISTED FOR THE OSCARS® 2025

The German feature film THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG (Run Way Pictures) by Mohammad Rasoulof has made it onto the shortlist of the last 15 films for the 97th Oscars® in the category Best International Feature Film. This was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on Thursday, December 17, 2024.

GERMAN FILMS IN OSLO

The Tykse Filmdager took place from November 25 to 29, 2024. For the third time, the Goethe Institute and German Films invited guests to the Vega Scene cinema to screen current German films. Films from the retrospective were also shown to mark the German Films anniversary.

DEVRIM LINGNAU IS THE GERMAN SHOOTING STAR 2025

For its 28th edition, the European Film Promotion (EFP) announced ten European up-and-coming actors who will be honoured as EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS 2025. This year, Germany will be represented by actor Devrim Lingnau (THE EMPRESS, HYSTERIA).

EFP will present the European Shooting Stars to the international film audience during the first Berlinale weekend.

70 YEARS OF GERMAN FILMS - A RETROSPECTIVE IN FILMS

In 2024, German Films celebrates its 70th anniversary. As part of this anniversary, we will be reviewing impressive and outstanding German films throughout the whole year in our monthly newsletter - all curated and evaluated by Oliver Baumgarten.
The December movie is from 2019 - the phenomenal drama SYSTEM CRASHER by Nora Fingscheidt.

KINO! FILM SALON: SISI & I by Frauke Finsterwalder

The focus of the next session of KINO! FILM SALON online film club on January 19, 2025 will be Frauke Finsterwalder’s period drama SISI & I. The drama stars the iconic Sandra Hüller as Countess Irma Sztáray, lady-in-waiting to Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

SHORT TAKE - A GERMAN FILMS PODCAST

Our upcoming SHORT TAKE episodes will be featuring  Damian Hardung and Jens Kevin Georg. For the first episode of 2025, we spoke to Actor Damian Hardung, who is known for his most recent role in the internationally successful Netflix series MAXTON HALL. For the second episode, we spoke to director Jens Kevin Georg, whose short film CRUST was recently shortlisted for the Oscars® .

DOK.INCUBATOR CALLS FOR DOCUMENTARIES IN ROUGH CUT STAGE

dok.incubator is looking for ambitious feature-length documentaries in the rough-cut stage to participate in its 2025 workshop. Filmmakers can submit their projects to work with world-class editors, receive personalized feedback on their rough cut from key decision makers, and develop unique marketing and distribution strategies. Deadline is January 27, 2025.

German films and co-productions accepted at Cartoon Movie 2025
57 projects from 16 countries have make the selection of Cartoon Movie, the co-production and pitching event for European animated feature films that will take place in Bordeaux from March 4-6, 2025. The selected works capture European animation's current creative diversity. The line-up includes mostly projects in development (34) and in concept (17), next to 3 films in production and 3 in sneak preview. Latvia will be the spotlight of this year's edition of Cartoon Movie. Seven German co-productions will be presented: THE TWILIGHT WORLD (Psyop Media Company Germany), VALENTINO (Zooper Film), CONDENADITOS (Studio Seufz), NESSIE JUNIOR (FFL), SKIP (Ulysses Filmproduktion), COCOBANANA (Knudsen Pictures) and THE LAST WHALE SINGER (Telescope Animation).

  • Sheffield DocFest: The 32nd edition of Sheffield DocFest will take place from June 18-23, 2025. The call for Film and VR entries is now open. Further information can be found here: Film and VR. Deadline is February 28, 2025, 12 noon.
  • DocsBarcelona Industry: DocsBarcelona Industry (May 12-16, 2025) will host the main professional meeting point for the non-fiction sector in Southern Europe. DocsBarcelona will celebrate its 28th edition from May 8-18, 2025. Further information here. Deadline is January 27, 2025.
  • FIDMarseille: The 36th edition of FIDMarseille will take place from July 8-13,  2025. Registrations are already open. Further information and registration here. Deadline for films produced in 2024: January 31, 2025. Deadline for films produced in 2025: March 15, 2025.
