GERMAN FILMS IN CANNES

The 77th Festival de Cannes took place this year from May 14 to 25, 2024. A total of 14 German productions and co-productions were shown in various sections in Cannes. In addition to the screenings, German Films was able to bring together national and international experts from the film industry at numerous receptions and networking events. The highlight this year was the celebration of the 70th anniversary of German Films. In terms of wins, Mohammad Rasoulof's THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG garnered four awards in total - the Jury's Special Award, the FIPRESCI Award, the Prix François Chalais and Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai. Two minority co-productions also got awarded: ARMAND by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel won the Caméra d'Or Award.  For GRAND TOUR, distributed by The Match Factory, Miguel GOMES won the AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTOR.

GERMAN FILMS IN ISTANBUL AT KINO24

After the launch at the 43rd Istanbul Film Festival in April, KINO 24 continued in May with four days of screenings of German films at the Sinematek/Sinema Evi Kadiköy, including a virtual Q&A with German director Timm Kröger.

GERMAN FILM FEST IN MADRID

The German Film Festival in Madrid will take place for the 25th time this year. From June 12 to 16, both current German films and well-known German productions from the retrospective celebrating 70 years of German Films will be shown in Spain.

PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE IN CANNES 2024

The European Film Promotion (EFP) welcomed this year's Producers on the Move recently at the Festival in Cannes. German producer Fabian Driehorst from Fabian&Fred, who is part of the 20 up-and-coming producers in this year's program, took part in the networking events.

GERMAN FILMS ABROAD 2023: FACTS AND FIGURES

In 2023, 524 German films in 66 countries generated a total box office of 121 million Euros and were seen by more than 18.8 million cinema-goers around the globe.

In 2024, German Films celebrates its 70th anniversary. As part of this anniversary, we will be reviewing impressive and outstanding German films throughout the whole year in our monthly newsletter - all curated and evaluated by Oliver Baumgarten.
The May movie is from 1985 - the drama ROSA LUXEMBURG by Margarethe von Trotta.

New German Short Films – Spring Catalogue Update
30 new fiction, documentary, animation and experimental shorts produced since November 2023 have just been added to the AG Kurzfilm’s online short film catalogue. The new shorts, selected by a jury from suggestions made by members of the AG Kurzfilm (German Short Film Association), include films from the festival line-ups of Clermont-Ferrand, Berlin, Rotterdam, CPH:DOX, and the animation festivals Stuttgart and Annecy, among others. Those interested can search for German short films in the online catalogue using a wide range of functions, keywords, themes, categories. International film professionals can screen the films online after registering. More than 1,000 short films produced since 2004 are now available for viewing. The latest catalogue update is available here. A selection of the recently added films can also be found on the T-Port Platform for Student and Short Films.  

Applications open for Munich FilmUp! Mentoring and residency program
The initiative MunichFilmUp! sees the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) supporting six debut feature projects on the basis of a treatment in cooperation with the Filmschoolfest Munich and the Filmfest München and as part of a partnership with the Pop Up Film Residency. Filmmakers will receive comprehensive mentoring between November 2024 and June 2025. This includes an individual three-week residency, support with the first draft of the film's script, and intensive networking activities within the industry and at festivals. The program is free of charge for the six finalists and also includes travel and accommodation. International film school students and young alumni (up to three years after graduation) can apply until September 1, 2024. Further information is available here.
