A shower of awards for German co-productions at Cannes

Numerous productions with German participation entered the competition at this year's Cannes International Film Festival (July 6 - 17, 2021) and the Semaine de la Critique – nine of which were awarded coveted prizes.

The Grand Prix in the main competition was won by Juho Kuosmanen with COMPARTMENT NO. 6 (FI/RU/EE/DE), which was co-produced by the German production company Achtung Panda!

Best Director was awarded to Leos Carax, whose ANNETTE (FR/DE/BE) was the opening film for this year's spectacle on the Croisette. From Germany, Fabian Gasmia (DETAiLFILM) was involved in the production.

The Jury Prize went to MEMORIA (CO/MX/FR/GBR/TH/DE/CN/CH) by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and HA'BERECH (AHED'S KNEE) (FR/DE/IL) by Nadav Lapid. On the German side, production companies The Match Factory and Komplizen Film were involved.

In the section Un Certain Regard, the Austrian-German production GREAT FREEDOM by Sebastian Meise was awarded the Jury Prize. Rohfilm Productions is involved from the German side. A Special Mention in the same section was awarded to Tatiana Huezo's PRAYERS FOR THE STOLEN (MX/DE/BR/CH), co-produced by The Match Factory.

The CST Artist - Technician Prize was awarded to Vladislav Opeliants for his work as Chief Director of Photography on PETROV'S FLU (RU/CH/FR/DE) by Kirill Serebrennikov. From Germany, Razor Film Produktion collaborated.

The Queer Palm Short Award went to the German entry FRIDA by Aleksandra Odic (DFFB). Odic also received the Lights on Women Award for her work. Hollywood star Kate Winslet presented the €30,000 prize sponsored by L'Oreal.

A co-production with German participation also celebrated a success at the Semaine de la Critique: the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award was presented to Sandra Melissa Torres for her role in AMPARO (CO/SW/DE/QA). The drama was co-produced by Flare Film.
