Next Generation Short Tiger: 10th anniversary of the talent showcase
German Films and the FFA are joining forces for the tenth time to present promising talents to the international industry in the short film initiative of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2020. The three jury members, actress Marleen Lohse, commissioning editor Katrin Küchler (MDR unicato) and the exhibitor Dr. Christian Bräuer (Managing Director, Yorck Cinemas), have selected 13 short films for the program. 82 films were submitted by 11 film schools, art and media academies and 50 films up to 5 minutes for the Short Tiger award, which were not made at film schools.
Simone Baumann, Managing Director of German Films: "The promotion of talent is particularly important to German Films. This year's selection is inspiring and proves that we don't have to worry about the next generation of creative talent and thus the future of German cinema, so long as the young filmmakers are given sufficient opportunities. It is, of course, painful that this will be the first time the program is not premiering on the big cinema screen in Cannes. But we are using all available channels to warmly recommend this year's line-up of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER to the international film industry.
NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2020 will be shown on two occasions as part of the Cannes Marché du Film Online screenings, on Wednesday, June 24 and Friday, June 26, respectively at 6:00 p.m. at German Films Kino 1. The filmmakers will be introduced in a live Q&A on German Films' Facebook page at 8:30 p.m. (CET) following the first screening. As usual, German and international interested parties from the film industry can request a DVD screener from German Films; its production was made possible thanks to sponsorship from Sonopress and pro omnia. Registered users of the industry platforms Festivalscope Pro and T-Port can view the selected films there, and industry representatives can also request a personal screening link from German Films (nextgeneration@german-films.de).

NEXT GENERATION was initiated in 1997 to present young talents from German film schools on an international level. The SHORT TIGER has been awarded by the FFA since 2000. The five prize-winning films for 2020 were announced on 26 March. The joint initiative of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER by German Films and the FFA has existed since 2011. Submissions for the program may not be any longer than 15 minutes and must have been realised by students of a German film school in 2019/2020. Films produced independently of higher education institutions could be submitted to AG Kurzfilm for the SHORT TIGER. Short films suitable for theatrical release and with a running time of under five minutes were invited to participate for this award.
German Films and the FFA thank the supporters of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2020: Sonopress and pro omnia as well as the cooperation partners AG Kurzfilm, Forum Film and HDF.
