In 2020 326 German films in 62 countries generated a total Box Office of 32,2 million euros and were seen by more than 5,1 million cinema-goers around the globe.
This represents a drastic drop of around 70 percent from the results of previous years, and was mainly caused by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

How diverse is the German film industry? Does it truly represent the wealth of facets, ideas and strengths in society? This question is being asked more and more, and not infrequently with sobering results. But what consequences can the industry draw from the criticism that has been levelled at it for years now – by people with a migration or refugee background, black people, indigenous people and people of color, representatives of people with disabilities, and those fighting for gender equality? German Films asked 52 different players in the German film industry to provide information about these and other questions.
In the first sitting of 2021, German Films' "Distribution Support" awards committee decided to support 16 foreign theatrical releases of German films. In total 135,864.60 Euros were allocated.
