A total of 17 German productions and co-productions were represented in various sections this year at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. German Films also hosted a cocktail at the Lido with around 150 guests.
Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) took place this year from September 5 to 15. A total of 278 films were programmed and screened during the 11-day festival, including 24 German productions and co-productions.
Grand Teatret and Gloria, in collaboration with German Films and the Goethe Institute Denmark invited guests to special cinema days in August as part of the 70th anniversary of German Films.
The 29th edition of the Festival du Cinéma Allemand in Paris will take place this year from October 9-13, 2024. The Paris-based event will open with a screening of FROM HILDE, WITH LOVEby Andreas Dresen.
The 24th edition of the Festival de Cine Alemàn in Argentina was a great success. From September 19 to 25, 2024 around 4,100 film fans came to the Cinepolis Recoleta cinemas to watch new German features, documentaries and short films.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® (AMPAS) announced the winners of the 51st Student Academy Awards in September. The German film CRUST was honored in the Narrative category.
The 15th edition of the traditional Czech-German Short Film Tour FEINKOŠT will kick off with a premiere screening at Prague’s Přítomnost Cinema on October 10, 2024.
70 YEARS OF GERMAN FILMS - A RETROSPECTIVE IN FILMS
In 2024, German Films celebrates its 70th anniversary. As part of this anniversary, we will be reviewing impressive and outstanding German films throughout the whole year in our monthly newsletter - all curated and evaluated by Oliver Baumgarten. The September movie is from 2003 - the epic documentary THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL by Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorn.
KINO! FILM SALON: THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (AUF DER ANDEREN SEITE) by Fatih Akin
The focus of the next session for the English-language KINO! FILM SALON online film club on October 13 will be Fatih Akin’s feature film drama THE EDGE OF HEAVEN.
The next two guests of our podcast SHORT TAKE are actor Max von der Groeben, who recently starred as Prince Bosco in CHANTAL IN FAIRYLAND, and writer-director Eva Trobisch, who is also an ambassador for our FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS campaign this year.
DEEP DIVE GENRE - A GERMAN FILMS PODCAST: SEASON 5 - 70 YEARS OF GERMAN FILMS
We continue the 5th season of our DEEP DIVE GENRE podcast focusing on our 70th anniversary. In 2024 German Films celebrates 70 years of German cinema abroad. In the next two episodes we talk to directors Andreas Dresen and Nora Fingscheidt.
Focus on Germany at Show Me Shorts Aotearoa New Zealand Germany is the Country in Focus at the 2024 edition of the Show Me Shorts Film Festival Aotearoa New Zealand, organized by the festival in partnership with the Goethe Institute of New Zealand. Show Me Shorts opens on October 10 in Auckland and will present 85 international short films in 126 screenings at 40 locations across the nation until October 28. Two special focus programs will screen at the festival: The Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg has curated a collection of seven German shorts, Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck (shorts/salon) selected three German and two international shorts about communication for the special event Hello Stranger. The German film LONG TIME NO SEE (LANGE NICHT GESEHEN) by Kevin Biele and the British production ROCK PAPER SCISSORS by German director Franz Böhm are among the four nominees for Best International Film. Anna Feistel, programmer of the Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg will serve on the national jury. The jury award winners will be announced on October 13, the winner of the audience award at the end of the festival. Calls for Submission
Visions du Réel: The call for non-fiction films and projects for the 56th edition of Visions du Réel (April. 4–13, 2025) is now open. The festival is looking for films for the official selection and for projects for VdR–Industry activities. The films in competition are screened as world, international or European premieres. Berlinale: Filmmakers are invited to submit their works for the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. In order to submit a film to the Berlinale you need to send the film and the completed online film entry form to the festival before the given deadline: Feature-length films: October 30, 2024; Shorts: November 13, 2024. When East meets West: WEMW 2025 (Trieste, January 19-22, 2025) opens the call for entries and announces a new East & West Focus with 15 programmes and new opportunities for a special 15th edition between creativity and innovation. Co-production forum deadline: October 18, 2024; Works in Progress: deadline November 5, 2024; Eave Slate: deadline November 5, 2024; Inspirational Labs: deadline November 5, 2024. Clermont-Ferrand 2025: The final deadline for international short film submissions to the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival 2025 is October 3, 2024. For the 17th time, the European co-production forum Euro Connection will be held during the festival on February 4 and 5, 2025. Submissions are welcome from short film projects up to 30 minutes (animation, fiction, documentary) that are planned as international co-productions, have already secured part of their funding, and will not start shooting before June 2025. XR projects up to 45 minutes will be presented as well, and applications should be sent directly to the festival. The Euro Connection deadline is on October 20, 2024.
